A man who stole a truck out of a victim’s yard, beat the owner and fled the scene, while leaving his cell phone behind in the stolen vehicle, has been caught.

On Monday, March 6, 2019 around 9 p.m., deputies responded to a reported fight in progress at the intersection of State Road 66 and Palmetto Street in Zolfo Springs, Fl. Once on scene, they spoke to a man who said his truck was stolen from his residence.

The victim said as the thief drove away in his truck, he followed and located him at an intersection going through his vehicle. The victim confronted the subject and asked what he was doing, in which he replied he was trying to find his cell phone. The victim reached in the truck, turned off the engine, removed the keys and told the thief he was contacting law enforcement before he was attacked. As a fight broke out between the two, the subject was able to escape and flee the scene.

While processing the victim’s vehicle for evidence, investigators located fingerprints and a cell phone, belonging to Angel Leon, who the victim positively identified through a photo lineup as the one who stole his vehicle and battered him.

Officers located Leon at a residence in Zolfo Springs on May 7, where he was arrested for vehicle grand theft and battery.
